The British A9 Cruiser Mk I was one of the first cruiser tanks developed for the British Army in the late 1930s, intended to support fast-moving operations by exploiting gaps in enemy lines. Designed with speed in mind, it was powered by a AEC 6-cylinder petrol engine, giving it a top speed of around 25 mph (40 km/h). The A9 was armed with a 2-pounder (40mm) main gun, capable of engaging early-war tanks, and three machine guns, including two mounted in small side turrets—a feature soon considered outdated. Armor was relatively thin, with a maximum of 14mm, offering limited protection but keeping the tank light and mobile.
