The British A22F Churchill Crocodile was a formidable flamethrower tank variant of the Churchill infantry tank, used by the Allies during World War II. Designed for close support, it retained the Churchill’s heavy armor and 75mm main gun but was equipped with a flamethrower instead of the hull-mounted machine gun. The Crocodile’s flamethrower was fed by an armored trailer towed behind the tank, carrying up to 400 gallons of fuel, which allowed it to project flames up to 120 yards (110 meters). This weapon made the Crocodile particularly effective for clearing enemy fortifications, bunkers, and trenches, striking fear into defenders and often leading to quick surrenders. The Churchill Crocodile saw action in the Normandy invasion and subsequent campaigns in Northwest Europe, where its thick armor and devastating flamethrower proved invaluable for Allied infantry support in difficult combat scenarios.
