The M31 Armored Recovery Vehicle (ARV) was a crucial asset for the U.S. Army during World War II, specifically designed to recover and repair damaged tanks on the battlefield. Based on the chassis of the M3 Lee medium tank, the M31 ARV featured a fixed turret housing a dummy 37mm gun, which helped it blend in with combat units and avoid enemy attention. Instead of offensive armament, it was equipped with a crane capable of lifting up to 30,000 pounds, a winch for pulling, and an assortment of tools and spare parts. This made it invaluable for towing disabled tanks, performing field repairs, and clearing obstacles. The vehicle's robust design allowed it to operate under fire and in harsh conditions, similar to a mobile workshop on tracks. The M31 ARV’s role was akin to that of a dedicated pit crew in a race, ensuring that frontline tanks could return to action quickly and maintain the momentum of armored advances. Its presence significantly boosted the operational readiness and sustainability of Allied armored units throughout the war.
