The Polish Uhlans, traditional light cavalry units, played a significant role in the early stages of World War II during the German invasion of Poland in 1939. Despite misconceptions, the Uhlans were not outdated cavalrymen charging tanks with lances, but rather modernized and motorized troops trained in reconnaissance, skirmishing, and infantry support. Many units were equipped with anti-tank rifles, light artillery, and machine guns, allowing them to effectively engage enemy forces. Uhlans fought valiantly in several key battles, such as Mokra, where they successfully ambushed and delayed German armored units. Though ultimately overwhelmed by the mechanized Wehrmacht, the Uhlans’ bravery and adaptability became symbols of Polish resistance. Survivors of these early battles often joined partisan forces or continued fighting alongside Allied armies in exile.
