Australian - LP4 Bandicoot Armoured Car

The LP4 Bandicoot was an Australian experimental armoured car developed during the Second World War as part of the country’s rapidly expanding domestic armoured vehicle programme. Developed around 1942, the Bandicoot used a locally produced chassis with an armoured hull and was intended primarily for reconnaissance and scouting duties. Like several Australian wartime vehicle projects, it was created at a time when the threat of Japanese invasion and uncertainty over overseas supplies encouraged Australia to develop its own military equipment. The LP4 remained a prototype rather than entering mass production, as imported Allied vehicles became increasingly available and offered better-established alternatives. Today, the unusual Bandicoot represents an interesting example of Australia’s experimental wartime vehicle development.
