Australian - Light Mortar Team (3) - In Shorts

The Australian Light Mortar Team provided infantry units with portable, close-range fire support throughout the Second World War. Typically equipped with the British 2-inch mortar, these small teams could quickly deploy to engage enemy infantry, machine-gun positions and troops concealed behind cover using high-explosive and smoke bombs. Lightweight enough to be carried alongside advancing infantry, the mortar proved particularly useful in the difficult terrain of the Pacific and New Guinea campaigns, where heavier supporting weapons could be difficult to move through dense jungle. Australian mortar teams also served in the Middle East and North Africa, making the 2-inch mortar a versatile and important infantry support weapon throughout the war.
