Australian - AC1 SENTINEL Tank (2pdr gun)

The AC1 Sentinel was Australia’s first domestically designed and mass-produced tank, developed during the early years of the Second World War when the threat of Japanese expansion and difficulties obtaining British equipment created an urgent need for locally produced armour. Entering production in 1942, the Sentinel was armed with the British 2-pounder (40mm) anti-tank gun and featured a distinctive one-piece cast hull and turret. Around 65 AC1 Sentinels were produced, primarily for training and evaluation, but the type never saw combat as increasing supplies of more capable Allied tanks made further production unnecessary. Despite its short service life, the Sentinel represented a significant achievement for Australia’s wartime industry and remains one of the most distinctive Australian armoured vehicles of WWII.
