Australian - Local Pattern 1 Carrier (LP1)

The Australian Local Pattern 1 Carrier (LP1) was an Australian-built tracked carrier developed during the early years of the Second World War as local industry expanded to meet the Army’s growing demand for armoured vehicles. Based on the British Universal Carrier concept, the LP1 entered production in 1940 and was designed as a small, mobile vehicle capable of transporting troops, weapons and equipment across the battlefield. Typically armed with a Bren light machine gun, it could be used for reconnaissance, infantry support, communications and general transport duties. The LP1 was followed by the improved LP2 and LP2A, but remains an important example of Australia’s rapidly developing wartime manufacturing capability and the versatile tracked carriers used by Australian forces during WWII.
