Australian - MMG Team with Backpacks (3)

The Australian MMG (Medium Machine Gun) Team provided sustained fire support for infantry formations during World War II, operating the reliable Vickers .303 medium machine gun. Typically the team consisted of a gunner, loader, ammunition carriers, and support personnel responsible for maintaining the weapon and ensuring a steady supply of ammunition and cooling water. Capable of delivering accurate, continuous fire over long distances, the Vickers was highly effective for suppressing enemy infantry, defending key positions, and supporting assaults.

Australian MMG teams served in North Africa, New Guinea, and other Pacific campaigns, where their firepower played a crucial role in both offensive and defensive operations. The Vickers’ reputation for reliability under harsh conditions made it one of the most trusted weapons in Australian service. Whether covering open desert approaches or jungle tracks, MMG teams provided the sustained fire that allowed infantry units to manoeuvre and hold ground against determined enemy attacks.
