Product information

About this product

The Rhino Heavy Armoured Car was an Australian prototype developed during the Second World War as the country sought to rapidly expand its locally produced armoured vehicle fleet. Developed around 1941–42, the Rhino was a large 4×4 armoured car built on a Canadian Military Pattern truck chassis and fitted with substantial armour protection. Its turret was intended to carry a 2-pounder (40mm) gun, supported by machine guns, giving it considerably heavier armament than many contemporary reconnaissance vehicles. Although the design demonstrated Australia’s growing ability to produce its own armoured fighting vehicles, the Rhino suffered from excessive weight and mobility problems and never progressed beyond the prototype stage. It remains one of the more unusual Australian armoured vehicle projects of WWII.
