Product information
The USMC M1 Anti-Tank Gun most commonly used during World War II was the 37mm M3 anti-tank gun, the standard light anti-tank weapon issued to U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps units early in the war. Introduced in the late 1930s, the gun was lightweight, easy to move by its crew, and capable of firing 37mm armour-piercing and high-explosive rounds, making it useful against light vehicles, machine-gun nests, and fortified positions. The weapon was usually operated by a four-man crew and could be towed by a jeep or moved by hand into firing position, which was especially useful in difficult terrain.
In the Pacific theatre, the M1 37mm gun was often used more as an infantry support weapon than a true anti-tank gun, since Japanese armour was generally light and relatively rare. Marine units used it in battles such as Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Okinawa, where it proved effective against bunkers, caves, and defensive strongpoints. As the war progressed, its anti-tank capability became less important, but its portability and versatility kept it in service throughout the conflict with the U.S. Marine Corps.
